In brief: Brazil’s current account deficit widens

* Brazil’s central bank (BCB) has released the latest figures for the balance of payments, which show that the country posted a US$4.3bn current account deficit in August, compared with US$1.8bn in August 2018. In the 12 months to August 2019, Brazil’s current account deficit totalled US$33.9bn, equivalent to 1.84% of GDP and up from US$31.3bn in the 12 months to July. Foreign direct investment (FDI) to Brazil totalled US$9.5bn in August.
