In brief: New Pemex oil wells to commence production at end of September

*The general director of Mexico’s state-owned oil company Pemex, Octavio Romero, has said that he expects that oil production at the ‘Xiquin 22’ well in Tabasco state will start at the end of September, while production at new wells at the ‘Cibix’, ‘Valeriana’, and ‘Quesqui’ fields, also located in Tabasco, are due to come on stream in October and November. All of the wells are operated by Pemex and Romero said that the start of production at these wells will help to increase overall production at Pemex to some 1.78m barrels per day (bpd) by December, up from 1.72m bpd currently. Romero added that he hopes that more wells at the ‘Cibix’, ‘Quesqui’, and ‘Chejekbal’ (also in Tabasco), and ‘Manik’ (located in Campeche state), will come on stream in December. Meanwhile new wells are to be drilled at the ‘Ixachi’ field in Veracruz state in December, which Romero described “as the most important field of the 22 fields that are being developed this year”. In the same press conference President Andrés Manuel López Obrador stated that the government has invested M$12.5bn in Pemex’s oil refineries this year to increase refining capacity as part of his plans to make Mexico less dependent on refined petrol fuel imports.
