BRAZIL: Bolsonaro presents his ‘new Brazil’ at UNGA

Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro stayed true to himself at this year’s United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, opening the general debate on 24 September with a combative speech which echoed his aggressive campaign rhetoric and made no attempt to seek conciliation, as some had thought it might. “I present [to you] a new Brazil, which is resurging after being on the brink of socialism,” Bolsonaro said as he launched into his 31-minute address, after thanking God for his life. The strongly ideological tenor of the speech will have baffled some UNGA attendees, while many in Brazil are now lamenting what they perceive to be the irreparable damage Bolsonaro has inflicted on his country’s international reputation.
