REGION: Mercosur-EU trade deal on the rocks

It took nearly 20 years to negotiate but the trade deal struck between the European Union (EU) and the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) is in greater danger of unravelling three months on than receiving ratification from member states. Parliamentary opposition in Austria could produce a domino effect, with both France’s President Emmanuel Macron and Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar seizing upon environmental concerns in the wake of Brazil’s devastating Amazon fires to express reservations.
