In brief: Costa Rica hails new maritime route to China

* Shipping vessel 'Xin Wei Hai' belonging to the state-owned China Ocean Shipping Company (Cosco) has embarked on its 22-day journey from the Moín Container Terminal (MCT) in Limón province, Costa Rica, to Shanghai, China. The vessel becomes the first to use the new commercial maritime route which aims to increase productivity and reduce transit time from 34-40 days to approximately 22 days. According to local news reports, the vessel has the capacity for 4,700 20-foot containers that will allow the transportation of fresh produce such as pineapples, bananas, and meat from Costa Rica to Asia, creating more opportunities in that export market.
