* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released its latest employment figures, according to which unemployment for the three months from June to August stands at 11.8%, down from 12.1% in the same period last year and down from 12.3% in the March-May 2019 rolling quarter. However, Ibge’s data show that employment in the informal sector has reached record levels, contributing to 87.1% of the new jobs created in August (the government has separately noted that
August saw high numbers of formal job creation). Furthermore, only 62.4% of the employed population paid official pension contributions in the June-August period.
