Brazil: On 20 September a committee formed of Brazil’s infrastructure ministry, the council for Brazil’s investment partnerships programme (PPI), and Brazil’s agency for the promotion of exports (Apex) concluded a five-day visit to New York. The committee, which was headed by infrastructure minister
Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, held 21 meetings with 68 representatives from banks, funds, private investors, associations, and specialist companies in an effort to attract a total of R$200bn (US$48.2bn) in investment for Brazil’s ports, airports, railroads, and highways by 2022. In a video clip posted on his
Twitter account, Gomes de Freitas noted that there was a large interest expressed “
in entering the Brazilian” market, adding that there is a “
big challenge to face” with regard to “
connecting capital, and financial investors with infrastructure operators”. Gomes de Freitas’s visit to the US followed the launch of the US-Brazil Strategic Partnership Dialogue on 13 September by US Secretary of State
Michael Pompeo and Brazil’s Foreign Minister
Ernesto Araujo. Amongst other themes the dialogue focused on ‘pursuing economic prosperity’.
