Nayib Bukele has presented the 2020 draft budget for US$6.4bn which now goes to the legislature for discussion and approval. President Bukele, who took office in June, said it prioritises public investment and social spending - education, health, and also security. He highlighted that the budget proposal will cover 100% of food for national police (PNC) personnel and members of the armed forces who participate in ‘Plan Control Territorial’ (President Bukele’s public security programme). It also covers 100% of the bonus to be assigned on a quarterly basis to operational, administrative, and technical personnel of the PNC and armed forces. As regards health, he noted that it includes important investment projects, with US$85m earmarked for supply of medicines and equipment for the hospital network; and US$2.7m for rehabilitation programmes. Meanwhile US$1.04bn has been assigned for education, representing 3.75% of GDP, of which US$28.7m will go on reconstructing and improving schools at a national level.
