In brief: Eclac backs López Obrador’s social programmes

* The executive secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America & the Caribbean (Eclac), Alicia Bárcena has congratulated the Mexican government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador for its social programmes. Speaking at the third meeting of the regional conference on Social Development in Latin America & the Caribbean which is taking place in Mexico City from 1-3 October and which is being organised by Eclac, the Mexican government, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Bárcena singled out in particular ‘Jóvenes Construyendo el Futuro’ ('youth building the future') which aims to provide on-the-job training opportunities for young people aged 18 to 29 years who neither work nor study; and ‘Sembrando Vida’ ('sowing life'), a reforestation plan in Southern Mexico which is also being rolled out in El Salvador and Honduras as part of efforts to curb migration.
