In brief: First shipment of Panamanian pineapples to China

* Panama’s ministry for the development of agriculture and livestock (Mida) announced the first shipment of Panamanian pineapples to Beijing. The two countries forged diplomatic relations in 2017 after Panama became the second Central American country, after Costa Rica, to break off ties with Taiwan. Mida’s minister Tomás Solís explained that the shipment represents the first of 2.5 containers which will be sent weekly to Beijing over the coming months. He said that this will increase to 25 containers a week by 2020, with the goal of exporting 100 containers a week within five years. Also indicative of closer trade links, in July China’s Shanghai customs office confirmed that the first shipment of exported Panamanian beef had entered the Chinese market. The 23 tonnes of beef were exported to China by sea on 22 June 2019.
