Public security role on the cards for Paraguay’s military

A series of recent security failings in Paraguay have led to a shake-up in the leadership of the country’s public security institutions, as members of the police force, penitentiary system, and government have been turfed-out for ills ranging from negligence to corruption and criminal association. Faced with this deepening public security crisis, President Mario Abdo Benítez has even spoken of giving the armed forces a role in the fight against organised crime. This is not the first time that the militarisation of public security has been mooted in Paraguay, but it remains a highly contested approach which has delivered mixed results elsewhere in the region.
