BRAZIL: Shadow of corruption looms over government

It took just over a month in office for members of President Jair Bolsonaro’s government to be touched by suspicions of graft relating to the 2018 election in Brazil [WR-19-06]. Of the two cabinet ministers implicated, both from the president’s Partido Social Liberal (PSL), Gustavo Bebianno took the hit and was dismissed on 18 February. Tourism Minister Marcelo Álvaro Antônio remained in his post, relatively untroubled by the police investigation into the allegations – until last week.
