MEXICO: Judicial autonomy under threat?

The unexpected resignation of a Mexico supreme court (SCJN) justice has raised concerns that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the ruling Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), not content with controlling the executive and the legislature, are seeking to secure control over the country’s top court. The resignation gives López Obrador the opportunity to appoint yet another SCJN justice and the political opposition has warned that this will result in the body becoming less independent from the executive, potentially removing the last obstacle between López Obrador and complete control of Mexico’s institutions. The selection process could become a new source of political tensions.
