* Ecuador’s ministry of energy and non-renewable natural resources has reported that operations in its trans-Ecuadorian oil pipeline system (Sote) are currently paralysed due to low volumes of crude oil. This is due to the suspension of operations in state-owned oil company EP Petroecuador’s oil fields, several of which have been occupied by protesters. So far, losses are estimated at around US$12.8m, as a result of failure to produce 231,800 barrels of crude oil. The Sote was operating at only 30% capacity, but such a low volume of crude oil inhibits the effective functioning of the pipeline and so EP Petroecuador technicians have decided to suspend operations in order to preserve the mechanical integrity of equipment.
