Sebastián Piñera has announced a new national roundtable to address the problems of drought afflicting the country. It will include the ministers of public works, agriculture, secretary general to the presidency, energy, and sciences, as well as legislators, academics, and experts. The roundtable, which will meet on a weekly basis, will propose a plan within 60 days which will focus on three areas: foundations of a long-term water policy; planning water infrastructure; and the institutional and legal framework. The government is also promoting an online campaign for the public to contribute to addressing the crisis through their daily activities. Piñera has issued 14 decrees relating to water scarcity for 126 communes in the regions of Coquimbo, Valparaíso, Metropolitan Santiago, O´Higgins, and Maule as well as declaring an agriculture emergency in 119 communes in those regions and also in Atacama.
