In brief: Ecuador’s losses due to unrest put at US$1.64bn

* Ecuador’s private sector lobby Cámara de Comercio de Quito (CCQ) has released a report which puts losses to the productive sector due to the recent unrest at US$1.64bn. The roadblocks, looting, and destruction of property over the last 11 days have complicated the transport and selling of goods. The most affected areas were commerce and manufacturing, having lost US$773m and U$254m respectively, according to the CCQ. Another private sector lobby, Cámara de Industrias Producción y Empleo de Cuenca (CIPEM), says the industries most affected were ceramics, home appliances, technology, furniture, paper, and cardboard. CIPEM’s CEO Roberto Maldonado says losses could be even bigger since “we still do not know how many markets have not been able to be stocked yet because of the days with no production”.
