In brief: Venezuela’s minimum wage up 375%

* Francisco Torrealba, the head of the worker’s committee in Venezuela's national constituent assembly (ANC), confirmed via social media that Nicolás Maduro’s de facto government has established a new minimum legal salary, which has reportedly increased by approximately 375%. Torrealba posted an extract online from Venezuela’s official gazette, which revealed that according to Decree No. 3.997, from 1 October, the country’s minimum monthly salary has been set at Bs150,000 (US$7.67). This compares with the previously established minimum salary of Bs40,000 (US$2.02). Torrealba also noted that a further Bs150,000 will correspond to a ‘Cesta Ticket Socialista’ (a food bonus provided to employees).
