COLOMBIA: Regional elections pose problems

Campaigning for Colombia’s regional and local elections on 27 October is reaching a climax. The campaign for Bogotá, the second most important elected post in the country, is especially fiercely contested. According to a report released this week by the local NGO Fundación Paz y Reconciliación (Pares), there are 184 candidates, spread across all the mainstream parties, either suspected of corruption or criminal ties, many with a high probability of being elected. This is up from 140 candidates flagged up by the NGO four years ago.
