MEXICO: Shootings undermine claims of progress

Two separate shootings that took place barely a day apart, and which claimed dozens of lives, have raised serious doubts over the success of the national security strategy pursued by the government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The two incidents appear to undermine government claims that progress is being made in addressing public insecurity and to fly in the face of López Obrador’s electoral promise that his administration would reduce the high levels of violence in Mexico. This is problematic for the government as it provides more fuel for its critics, which have always argued that the proposed national security strategy is flawed and would not make a real difference.
