In brief: IMF conditions continued support for Argentina

* The managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, said the IMF remains committed to working with Argentina to help it overcome its current financial and economic problems, but indicated that the continuity of the US$57bn Stand-by Arrangement (SBA) with the country will depend on the economic policies adopted by the new Argentine government that emerges from the upcoming general election. Speaking during the IMF annual meetings in Washington DC, Georgieva said that the IMF is “fully committed to work with Argentina to make sure that there can be policy improvements that lead ultimately to better lives for people in Argentina…. We will be very interested to see what policy framework would be put in place [by a new government] and when we have that, we can continue this conversation”.
