Brazil: On 10 October, US President
Donald Trump reiterated his support for Brazil to become a full member of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) despite a leaked letter from the US Department of State demonstrating that the US only supported Argentina and Romania’s bid to join the organisation. In a tweet, Trump wrote
“the joint statement released with President Bolsonaro in March makes absolutely clear that I support Brazil beginning the process for full OECD membership”. Later in the day, in a live Facebook broadcast, Brazil’s President
Jair Bolsonaro said that he already knew of US support for Argentina and Romania. Bolsonaro went on to say that the process of joining the OECD could take up to a year and a half and that Argentina and Romania just
“happened to be ahead of [Brazil]” in this process. US Secretary of State
Michael Pompeo released a statement that same day saying
“the leaked letter does not accurately represent the US’s position with respect to OECD enlargement. We are enthusiastic supporters of Brazil’s entry into this important institution and the US will make a strong effort to support Brazil’s accession.”End of preview - This article contains approximately 742 words.
