In brief: Chilean protests damage estimated in the billions

* According to Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera, the damage caused in the recent protests that spread throughout the country is estimated to be in the “billions of US dollars”. The damage done to the Santiago metropolitan region’s metro system alone is estimated to be over US$300m, according to Santiago Metro president Louis de Grange. Protesters took to the streets and vandalised, looted, and torched private and public property including some Santiago metro stations and six Santiago Metro trains; three of these were destroyed.
