US gives Venezuela’s interim government lifeline over Citgo

Brazil: On 23 October, Brazilian federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro, said he was no longer seeking the post of Brazilian ambassador to the US even though US President Donald Trump had formally endorsed him for the position. For three months President Bolsonaro had been seeking to appoint his son to the post – a move which attracted complaints of nepotism from his political opponents. Eduardo Bolsonaro has since said that instead he would focus on leading the Partido Social Liberal (PSL), the main party in Brazil’s governing coalition, and “stay in Brazil to defend conservative principles” and “to make the tsunami that was the 2018 election a permanent wave”. President Bolsonaro called his son’s decision a “very hard” one that “makes [him] very proud”.
