In brief: Malnutrition and obesity cost El Salvador 10% of its GDP

* According to an evaluation done by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), the problems of malnutrition and obesity in El Salvador cost the country more than US$2.5bn, approximately 10% of its GDP. The study calculates that amount by taking into account the US$1.7bn in lost productivity, the US$820m in extra medical expenses, and the US$8.7m costs in education. Regarding the social costs of malnutrition and obesity in El Salvador, the study shows that four out of 10 children with malnutrition do not finish primary school and nine out of 10 do not finish secondary school. The study adds that 1m Salvadoreans suffer from diabetes and hypertension due to obesity. The WFP is due to release the results of similar studies carried out in Guatemala, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic in coming weeks.
