In brief: ‘Tía María’ mining project given green light

* Peru’s mining council, an autonomous organisation attached to Peru’s energy & mines ministry that acts as the mining sector’s administrative body, has confirmed the granting of a construction licence for the controversial US$1.4bn ‘Tía María’ copper mining project. The license was granted to Southern Perú Copper Corporation (SCCP), an affiliate of Grupo México, the largest mining corporation in México. The Peruvian government decided to suspend the project’s licence back in August following the filing of judicial complaints against the project presented by the local community in Valle de Tambo, Arequipa region. Valle de Tambo inhabitants have staged violent protests against the project in the past demanding its cancellation on the fear that it will negatively affect their community. The suspension of the license came after a series of deadly and disruptive protests across Arequipa, and, in a sign that this could be repeated, Valle de Tambo residents have once again taken to the streets to protest against the mining council’s latest decision.
