López Obrador’s security policy is failing

Three major security incidents shook Mexico over four days in October. They happened in the states of Michoacán on 14 October, Guerrero on the 15th, Sinaloa on the 17th. Together they have delivered a hammer blow to the credibility of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s security policies. The country’s drug trafficking organisations (DTOs) are treating government strategy, described by the president as ‘abrazos no balazos’ (‘hugs, not bullets’), with contempt.
