In brief: Unemployment stagnates, informal sectors grows in Brazil

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures for unemployment, according to which the unemployment rate stood at 11.8% in the third quarter of 2019, a small decrease on the 12% recorded in the second quarter of the year and the 11.9% recorded during the same period last year. In absolute numbers, the employed population grew by 0.5% quarter-on-quarter and the unemployed population decreased by 2%. The Ibge notes that the number of workers in the formal private sector remains unchanged whereas the number of workers in the informal sector grew by a record 2.9% quarter-on-quarter, and 3.4% year-on-year, to a total 11.8m people in July-September 2019.
