In brief: Industrial production continues to fall in Brazil

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has published new figures which show that industrial production fell by 1.2% in the third quarter of the year compared to the previous quarter. The fall in production in the third quarter is in line with the continuous fall in activity in the sector registered since the fourth quarter of 2018 as industrial production continues to suffer from a major slowdown. With the third quarter results, industrial production levels have contracted by 1.4% in the first nine months of the year. However, an Ibge report highlighted that industrial production increased by 0.3% month-on-month and by 1.1% year-on-year in September, suggesting that the sector is starting to pick up.
