Lenín Moreno has announced that he will be sending the national assembly a
“new project of economic urgency focused on tax issues” after the legislature rejected and archived the Ley de Crecimiento Económico, the president’s previous tax reform proposal. This bill was Moreno’s second measure proposed under the guidance of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to tackle the country’s fiscal deficit. The first measure, a presidential decree that eliminated all petrol fuel subsidies, was reversed after it was met with 12 days of mass protests and social unrest.
