In brief: Mexico and Singapore talk trade and port management

* Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has received Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on a state visit. Hours before the encounter López Obrador informed the press that he would seek to strengthen bilateral commercial ties and seek advice on a plan to develop and manage the major maritime ports in the cities of Salina Cruz and Coatzacoalcos, which lie in the southern states of Oaxaca and Veracruz at either end of the Tehuantepec Isthmus—the shortest interoceanic shipping route prior to the Panama Canal. The López Obrador government has pledged to invest US$413m to modernise the Salina Cruz and Coatzacoalcos ports as parts of its plans to promote the economic development of the Tehuantepec Isthmus.
