BOLIVIA: Áñez’s reconciliation pledges ring hollow

Since declaring herself interim president following Evo Morales’s resignation on 10 November [WR-19-45], Jeanine Áñez has pledged to “restore peace and hold free and transparent elections in the shortest time possible”. Major doubts have emerged regarding these pledges, however. Among the changes which have angered supporters of Morales and his Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) are an interim cabinet stacked with figures from the Media Luna eastern lowlands, an opposition bastion, and policy changes which go far beyond Áñez’s declared remit of “calling elections”. Her promises to restore peace have been most called into question by a decree she passed exempting the armed forces (FFAA) from criminal prosecution when maintaining public order; since then violence has escalated amid clashes between the military and pro-Morales supporters, leaving over 20 dead.
