MEXICO: López Obrador under fire over human rights czar

The appointment of a controversial new head of Mexico’s national human rights commission (CNDH) has triggered the resignation of various officials from the body and raised widespread concerns over the political independence of the organisation. Perhaps more problematically for President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the ruling leftist Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), it also appears to have led to the breakdown of relations with the political opposition in the federal senate and even to tensions with municipal and state governments that suggest that the issue could turn into the next political crisis for the López Obrador administration.
