HAITI: Moïse clings on amid fresh protests

Haiti’s President Jovenel Moïse appealed for unity on 18 November to help overcome a socio-political crisis that has paralysed the country since mid-September. Moïse deliberately echoed the words of Haiti’s founding father Jean-Jacques Dessalines to mark the 216th anniversary of the Battle of Vertières when he won a decisive victory over French forces to secure independence. Protesters were unimpressed. They staged nationwide marches demanding the resignation of Moïse, who pointedly thanked the national police force (PNH) during his speech, the day after hundreds of police officers staged protest marches of their own.
