Mexico City’s new head of security faces reputational challenge

Omar García Harfuch, the security minister in Mexico City (CDMX), has had to dismiss claims that narcotics that were confiscated in an operation carried out on 22 October had been stolen. García, who became the head of the public security ministry (SSP) on 4 October, stated on 2 November that such rumours were unfounded and that the seized drugs - 2.5 tonnes of cannabis as well as several kilograms of cocaine and methamphetamines - remained with the authorities. High calibre weapons and human remains were also confiscated during the raid, which was carried out by members of the navy (Semar) and Mexico City’s investigative police.
