NICARAGUA: Flare-up of tensions with Church

The recent resignation of Evo Morales as Bolivia’s president continues to have an impact on other countries in the region. One of his closest allies, Nicaragua’s President Daniel Ortega, has been accused by local and international human rights groups of intensifying the government repression of opponents which has been taking place since April 2018. In particular, these actions, which many link to Ortega’s response to Morales’s forced resignation, have targeted the Catholic Church. The renewed concerns about human rights in Nicaragua take place as the Organization of American States (OAS) recently presented its long-awaited report: its conclusions suggest the country is one step closer to facing sanctions from the hemispheric body, including the suspension or termination of its member state status.
