In brief: Mexico pushes back on US labour oversight

* Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has said that his government is in contact with Democrat lawmakers in the US over their concerns with the implementation of a labour reform under the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement (USMCA), rejecting the need for external oversight as the Mexican government is fully committed to the enforcement of new labour rules. The ratification of USMCA by the US congress has been delayed by Democrat concerns over Mexico’s implementation of its labour reform. Recent suggestions that US inspectors could carry out inspections of Mexican factories were ill received by Mexico’s business sector, and also opposed by the government’s deputy foreign minister for North American affairs and USMCA negotiator, Jesús Seade. López Obrador has assured that the issue will not derail the ratification of USMCA, suggesting “panels” made up of US, Mexican and third country representatives could be set up to review the enforcement of labour laws in Mexico.
