In brief: Brazil’s industrial production up in October

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures for industrial production, which show that the industry grew for the third consecutive month in October. Industrial production expanded 0.8% compared with September, and 1% compared with October 2018. Coordinator of Ibge’s survey André Macedo notes that domestic demand and a small improvement in the labour market are helping drive this positive trajectory. “This improvement is far from making up past losses, but it shows a change in the industrial sector, which was negative until the middle of the year,” he said. Over the ten months to October 2019, industrial production accumulated a 1.1% contraction.
