CHILE: No let-up for Piñera

Some six weeks on, intense and often violent protests against the right-wing Chile Vamos government led by President Sebastián Piñera are continuing. Despite a range of concessions, including a referendum on a new constitution (scheduled to take place in April 2020) and a new economic recovery package, demonstrations, looting, and strikes are ongoing. The damage to the economy from the persistent protests was confirmed by the release this week of the Imacec economic activity index, a proxy for GDP, for October, which suffered its heaviest contraction for a generation. There is no indication that the Piñera administration will pacify the country in the near future.
