* A shipment containing 177.9 tonnes(t) of gold concentrate has left for Europe, the first to be exported from the Fruta de Norte mine, located in Ecuador's southern province of Zamora Chinchipe. The mine, run by Canadian company Lundin Gold, is expected to produce 310,000 ounces of gold and 400,000 ounces of silver every year until 2034, generating a total of US$7.88bn in revenue. Gold mining has been declared a priority for Ecuador’s national development, despite strong criticism from environmentalists and indigenous communities.
