* Brazil’s agriculture minister,
Tereza Cristina da Costa Dias, has highlighted that the price of beef has fallen on average 9% across the country in the first week of December, following a sharp increase in the price of meat, especially beef, over the past few weeks. According to the Universidade de São Paulo’s centre in advanced studies on applied economy (Ceapa), beef prices in São Paulo state rose by 37% over the course of November. Dry weather affecting grasslands growth and the fattening of cattle, and an increase in exports, notably to China, have driven up prices, Da Costa Dias explained. She said that the government would not intervene in the market, that prices were now stabilising, and dispelled any concerns that the country might be suffering from a shortage of beef.
