Introduction

As this issue went to press, Alberto Fernández had just been sworn in as Argentina’s next president, marking the country’s return to Peronism after four years of centre-right rule under now-former-president Mauricio Macri (2015-2019). One of the biggest challenges facing Fernández is how to tackle the country’s deep economic crisis and necessary debt renegotiation, something on which he has remained vague throughout the transition period. The first article in this December edition of the Latin American Regional Report: Brazil & Southern Cone focuses on what can be expected on this front from Argentina’s new president and his recently unveiled economic team.
