CHILE: Still struggling to appease protests

The Chilean government has taken more steps this week to try to put an end to the social protests that have been raging in the country for over a month now. These have included more initiatives designed to address some of the protest demands, such as improving pensions and tackling other issues that entrench social and economic inequality in the country. But with the main initiative previously tabled to try to resolve the discontent – the drafting of a new constitution – still stuck in congress, the highly damaging social mobilisations look set to continue.
