A new era in Brazilian politics

On 1 January 2019, Jair Bolsonaro was sworn in for a four-year term as the 38th president of Brazil, after winning a divisive election in October 2018. In theory, this election signalled the supposed return to political normality, following the unelected government of Michel Temer (2016-2019) which took over after the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff in 2016. In practice however, Bolsonaro’s victory marked the start of a new era in Brazilian politics.
