Brazil: A year of Jair Bolsonaro

The economy and security remain the key to re-election hopes

In December 2019, Bolsonaro’s approval ratings stood at 30%, largely unchanged over the course of the year. Although lower than his elected predecessors at the end of their first year in office, these remain acceptable, and more importantly, sufficient to sustain him. In a way, Bolsonaro has proven to be a consistent president. His first year in office has confirmed the worst fears of his detractors, while keeping alive the high hopes of his strongest supporters and rewarding the gamble of those who chose to ignore his more unpalatable aspects in the name of the economy.
