In brief: Cuban LPG shortage linked to US sanctions

* Cuba’s state-run oil company Unión Cuba-Petróleo (Cupet) has announced that the country is experiencing a shortage in the supply of liquid petroleum gas (LPG), a result, it asserts, of a US sanction imposed against Cuba’s primary gas supplier Corporación Panamericana SA, on 26 November 2019. The sanction by the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) connects the company with providing resources to “the illegitimate Venezuelan regime”. Cuban authorities have consequently announced that supplies of LPG for public consumption would be affected, with efforts under way to source it elsewhere. In the meantime, citizens are requested to be sparing in their use of  the fuel.
