* Cuba’s government has announced the successful conclusion of the first tests by the country’s first biomass electric generation plant, which is located near the Ciro Redondo sugar mill, in Ciro Redondo municipality, Ciego de Ávila province, to synchronise it to the national electricity system. According to the government, the facility, which was constructed by BioPower SA, a United Kingdom-Cuba venture along with Chinese capital, uses ‘marabú’, a wild and invasive spreading plant, to generate 300MW in 24 hours. BioPower’s Vice President
Carmen Taboada said that when the plant is fully functioning, it will deliver all the electricity the Ciro Redondo sugar mill needs, with the rest to be fed into the national grid, saving the country some 100,000 barrels of oil a year.
