BOLIVIA: Violence avoided, but tensions higher than ever

Inaugurated as a public holiday in 2009, Plurinational State Day was envisioned as a celebration of unity between Bolivia’s multiple cultures and communities. On 22 January 2020, it served instead to highlight the fierce divisions that have come to characterise Bolivian politics and society, as the day was dominated by the exchange of criticisms and accusations between the interim government and its opponents.
