CHILE: Polls pummel Piñera

The pressure on President Sebastián Piñera is unrelenting. His popularity sank to a new low last week when a nationwide survey released by the Centro de Estudios Públicos (CEP) confirmed he was the least popular head of state since the end of Chile’s military dictatorship (1973-1990). He was denied any respite that the summer holidays might have brought when demonstrators took to the streets of Santiago and were involved in the most violent clashes with the Carabineros militarised police so far this year on the eve of a silent march in which relatives of victims of the dictatorship joined protesters to mark three months since the social unrest began.
