GUATEMALA: Giammattei takes office – more of the same?

Alejandro Giammattei and his conservative Vamos government took up the reins of power in Guatemala last week, making all-too-familiar pledges which have failed to materialise under his predecessors: to tackle poverty and food insecurity, corruption, and crime. Giammattei, who was successful on his fourth bid for the presidency, is himself part of the political establishment which has been discredited in recent years, particularly under his predecessor Jimmy Morales (2016-2020) who will be remembered for ending the mandate of the United Nations-backed International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (Cicig) after 12 years in the country. Few are optimistic that Giammattei, who the media has already dubbed “Jimmyttei” after his predecessor, will succeed where others have failed.
