In brief: Ecuador begins trade negotiations with Mexico

* Technical teams from Ecuador and Mexico have begun meetings as part of a negotiation process aimed at coming up with a transparent legal framework to regulate and boost bilateral trade of goods and services as well as investment. The meetings, which are taking place from 28 to 30 January in Ecuador’s capital, Quito, are part of Ecuador’s wider efforts to join the Pacific Alliance trade bloc which includes Mexico, Chile, Peru and Colombia. Ecuador’s deputy minister of foreign trade & investment Diego Caicedo explained that the first round of talks will focus on seven areas: access to markets; rules of origin; sanitary and phytosanitary measures; facilitation of trade; intellectual property; good regulatory practice; and competition policy. Mexico and Ecuador currently have a partial scope trade agreement in the framework of the Latin American Integration Association (Aladi), which covers a limited number of products. The two countries are seeking a wider agreement that includes goods and services, and boosts investment.
